SO.

I downloaded the Wolfram Alpha iPhone app onto my iPod Touch, because they dropped the price from $50 to $2, and hooray portable nerdery! And I was playing with it, as you do, and typed in "next solar eclipse" as it suggested. Well, there's one this summer, on July 11, visible to the Southern Atlantic ocean. Then I typed in "Next solar eclipse after July 12".

Oh hey! May 20, 2012! That's 5 days after my birthday!

Oh heeeyyy! It's visible from the Western United States!

Oh hheeeeeyyyyyyy! The path travels over northern California, actually!

What I'm saying here is that May of 2012 will feature me traveling to northern California, visiting a town called Eureka, and then viewing an Annular Solar Eclipse with my very own (properly filtered) eyes.

There's lots of pretty National Forests around there, so I hope to also pay them some visits. I love forests. Whatever my final plan ends up being, it will include forest time, somewhere.

So yeah. I'm going to add this to one of the blank spots on my Mission 101 list.

Two random things that came to mind after I finished my last post that wouldn't really fit into my last post:

1) I have an idea for NaNoWriMo: Novel by poll. Kind of like [livejournal.com profile] tomnoir's Blackmoon story, except I'll actually finish it (oooooh, burn...). I can use polls to let Livejournal decide the genre, plot, setting, and characters, and then just go to town. Added bonus: if I get stuck, I can just throw out another poll! Genius.

2) Soooooo I really dig JC Hutchins' 7th Son trilogy, and he's got a new book coming out soon. Since he can't podcast the upcoming book, he wrote a prequel that will be podcastededed instead. And the first episode was released on my birthday. And he did this on purpose... !!! He had mentioned before that he was aiming for mid-May, so I jokingly tweeted to him that he should release it on May 15, since that was my birthday. Annnnd... he did it! Then when I tweeted something about how it was a great birthday treat, he replied that he stuck to the deadline so he could release on my birthday. And then I flailed about for a bit and died until I was dead. Bonus: the patient the main character (a therapist) is treating is an elderly quilter who hides clues in her quilts, and this is awesome.

First, a meme. I thought think this one is kind of interesting )

Last night I was zonked by 9, and at some point Megan called me. I remember hearing the phone ringing, and I remember saying "MEH" to the phone. She left a message, and I slept on. But! My phone likes to remind me that I have messages periodically, so it beeped at me throughout the night. I guess it woke me up a few times, because I have the memories of getting up and going over to my alarm clock to hit snooze, and then being very confused by the lack of alarm. This happened a couple times. On the plus side, when my alarm went off for real, I ended up hitting snooze fewer times than normal, because part of my brain thought I'd already hit snooze a couple times. Go, brain!

Someone buy me this. I need it. For star parties, for my porch, for NaNoWriMo writing in parks... It is necessary. Clearly.

Speaking of NaNoWriMo! I have a big post brewing on that very topic. It is currently about half finished, waiting patiently in a private post for me to get around to finishing it. I should do that tonight.

I had sushi today. I'd been craving it since Sunday, when I got an ad in the mail that included pictures of sushi at a local Japanese place that finally reopened. Oh man. When you are craving something, and you finally get it? Bliss, lemme tell ya.

Oh, and my phone's battery died today (while I was composing a text to [livejournal.com profile] wistfulmaid). I would just like to say that on the day that a cell phone manufacturer makes a phone that doesn't use more energy to say "OMG LOW BATTERY AAAHHHH" every three seconds, I will give that manufacturer three firstborn children. And a handful of souls. I mean, seriously? With all the beeping, lighting up, and vibrating that phones do when they are low on juice, they could probably last days longer if they'd just shut up about it. Why can't it pop up a message ONCE, and then shut up once the user acknowledges the message? Oh, that's right, because that would make sense.

Also, I should probably get a real phone charger to replace the one Hawking chewed through. I'm currently using my USB cord to charge it, which is inconvenient because I can't do anything with the phone while it's charging. No talking, no texting, no nuffin'. So I put it off for days, and then my phone dies while I'm texting. I blame the media. And video games.

Going back to the topic of NaNoWriMo, I need an idea. You see, I've been playing with yWriter (I'm actually starting to poke at and sort-of edit Syrup!), and while it is a cool program, I can't really dig into it unless I'm writing something new. Plugging in a pre-existing book is okay, but kind of meh. So I'm thinking I'll use it for NaNoWriMo, for two reasons: 1) I want to see if I can do a novel without flying by the seat of my pants, and 2) I want to play with this program. My plan is to use yWriter to set up an outline, and figure out all the scenes, then transfer the scene descriptions to index cards for portableness. Then when I'm off writing with others, or just over there on my couch, I can pick an index card and write that scene, then plug it into yWriter when I feel like it. I'll leave plenty of room for improvisation, of course, because I don't think I could completely give up the madness that NaNo writing can bring (a certain fishy dream sequence comes to mind). But, overall, I'd like to have the thing plotted out.

The problem with this, though, is that I have no idea how to plot out a novel. I'm so used to my highly organic writing style that planning is completely foreign to me. Like Greek, or Slovakian. I think that if I had a starting idea I could pull something together, but I don't know what I want to write. Maybe an "ensemble going after a MacGuffin" novel would be fun, a la "Rat Race". Who knows. WHAT SAY YOU, LIVEJOURNAL?

I am awake! For like the first time all week. Guys, it has been a crazy week. Going in to work early and staying late, every day? Not so much fun. But the paycheck will be magnificent. Working overtime sucks, but that paycheck sure is wonderful.

It's funny, I have to keep reminding myself that I'm not working tomorrow. My mind is convinced that work is all there is. But no! Tomorrow I am sleeping the heck in.

So if you look up the word pathetic in the dictionary, you will see a picture of Hawking. That kitten's life is so tragic! Last night I was cruel, so cruel to her, by locking her out of my bedroom while I was trying to sleep without a kitten playing with my toes. I am so mean. She cried due to the extreeeeeeme tragicness of it all. And then, of course, I caved and let her back in. Because I am a sucker.

Last night I started writing on a Thing. It's actually an idea from News From Poughkeepsie, one that really struck my fancy. I'm having fun with it so far, and I have an idea of where I'm going, I just have no idea why an entire apartment building would seclude itself from the world other than being a cult.

Hawking has decided to teeth on George, my stuffed dog that wears headphones that are secretly speakers. It is intensely amusing to see this little kitten hauling around a stuffed dog five times her size. But he's a tough dog, so long as she doesn't discover the pocket with the headphone jack.

I have an idea. I really want to clean out my closet. I want to toss all the junk that is in there and condense all the stuff I actually want to keep into just a few boxes or something. Then I want to get some cheap sheets or something and move my cats' litter boxes into that closet. Since I never use it, it would still be out of the way, but it'd be bigger. And then I could put some of my wire shelves into the coat closet that currently houses the litter boxes and finally have a pantry. This "using my counter as a pantry" thing is getting old. Also, being unable to use my Costco card to stock up for cheaps just because I don't have room is frustrating. I might get started on it tomorrow, but I kind of doubt it. Tomorrow needs to be laundry day first, then other stuff. But it is a plan. The only problem is the few clothing items I do keep in my closet. I figure the closet is big enough that I could possibly keep the clothes in the opposite corner with no ill effects, or I could use more of the wire shelving to rig something in my room proper. I'll figure something out, though. I want a pantry!

Oh! I am always amused my wank in non-wanky communities. The best was when there was DRAMA in [livejournal.com profile] weathernerds, but the girl was deleting comments so I didn't get the full effect. In [livejournal.com profile] cooking, though, DRAMA gets fun, because there are so many members. 99% of the time is it a totally drama-free community, but every once in a while we get someone come in with something really stupid, like a request to put all "unhealthy" recipes behind a cut to promote healthy living, and much fun is had. I love that community so much.

Remember that idea I had almost a month ago to make a mix cd of really EPIC songs? Well, it's coming together nicely. Right now I'm putting it in a good order and trying to decide how many Muse songs I really want on there. I don't want it to be all OMG MUSE but then again I can't decide between a couple of songs to pick one to keep. Decisions are hard! Because Mix CDs are serious business, yo. I'm also trying to decide if I want to do the burn-and-mail thing, or if I want to do it all on Muxtape. Or I might just zip it all up and post it to my own webspace. Decisions!

I feel like I have a lot more to say. I'm feeling talky. I slept today after getting home from work. I napped from about 5 to 9:30. I needed it, but now I'm going to be up all night and it's going to throw me off. I should go lay down and play Animal Crossing or something. I think that's what I'll do.

I just sent an email to the planetarium at the Pacific Science Center asking what the requirements are to work as a teacher in the planetarium, or just as a general science teacher person in the museum proper. I also asked what they look for specifically at their place. If I could work there, I would be fulfilling two dreams in one go- I'd be doing what I love AND living in Washington state.

(I used to be obsessed with the idea of moving to Washington. I remember applying to colleges just because they were in Washington. Seriously. Of course, this was before my parents told me that I wasn't going anywhere since I was graduating young. The obsession has lessened, but I would still looooooove to live up there. Or even Oregon. The northwest, anyhow.)

Also: I made salsa! It came out a little hotter than I usually like it, because I didn't remove the seeds from the jalapeƱos (I didn't have any gloves, so I didn't want to handle them a whole lot). I am glad I only used 3 of the 5 peppers the recipe called for. I'm going to divvy it up and add things to is, to experiment. I'm going to try adding sugar and pineapple, and see which I like best.

I also made tortilla chips from corn tortillas. They are delicious. I baked them in batches, and om nom nom.

I just realized I have not eaten today, except for the quarter of a piece of cake Megzilla brought me and the few chips I sampled (I had to make sure they were turning out okay, you see). I am kind of hungry. I am going to go eat something.

It just hit me that on Thursday I will start writing my new novel, and I have no idea what I'm going to write about. This time last year, I at least had a name I loved. This year, I got nothing. And I'm a liiiiiiiiiittle bit freaked out.

Names, anyone? I don't know if I can ever top "Queightiey" as a name, but I hope I can find one I like at least half as much as I loved Queightiey. I think if I have a name, I'll be okay. A name, and a first word.

Playing with random name generators has yielded the following:
Ryan Gwenevere
Jaynie Lyubov
Thorborg Svanhildur
Cassarah Savannah
Briar Rosa

I'm a little indifferent towards all of them. I kind of like Thorborg, for a robot. Otherwise, eh.

Looking back at my nano posts last year, I wasn't keen on Queightiey at the start, but man I love her now. That's reassuring, at least.

Oh, NaNoWriMo, you induce such panic, yet I cannot resist the lure of your siren call!

100 Things

So, since Geek Fu action Grip is no more (*sadness*), I can't write anything to submit. That was an item on my 101 List, so now I have to come up with something to replace that.

Fortunately, [livejournal.com profile] notlikeyourmom recently started doing a writing project called "100 Things". You pick 100 things that make you You, and then write an entry about each thing. I've decided that this will replace a Geek Fu essay nicely, so now I'm working on my list of 100 things that make me Jessica. The list consists of things in my life that either have contributed to who I am now, like past relationships and school experiences, or things that I love that have become part of me, like my knitting or my cat.

I'm taking ideas. What do you guys think of when you think of me? I've already got 50-something things, but I'd like to see what y'all think.

PS: New icon!

I know some of you have mad icon-making skizzles (yo), so I am requesting your aid. I need (want) an icon of Marvin. Specifially, I want it to say "Marvin, I love you..."
I want to use this picture:

Why don't I make it myself? Because all I have at the moment is MSPaint, and resizing *anything* makes it look wonky and icky.

And a million cool points to the awesome person who helps a sista out!

And even a small movie of the kitten boldly backing away from the Count.

And can anyone else come up with an Irish name for the kitten? She's definitely Irish. (EDIT: How about Nialleen = "Little Female Champion"? It's cute and totally suits her. Nialleen or Molly?)

PS: This is my favorite picture of her. She's totally posing for the camera.
