Food... food... food... let's get some food!

SO. In an attempt to kill my arch-nemesis, [livejournal.com profile] kandigurl, I suggested to her that we go to the Texas State Fair to consume fried foods. You see, every year there is a competition to create the most delicious and bizarre and creative fried foods, and the winners are served at the fair, along with a whole bunch of other delicious things. This year's winner, for example, was chicken-fried bacon.

No, really. They took strips of bacon, breaded them, and deep fried them.

So today we went to the fair and busted out the fried-foods map and tried to kill each other.

I, of course, took pictures.

Our first stop was the Deep-fried Grilled Cheese Sandwiches.

Ignore my gnawed-upon thumbnail and focus on the sammich. Look at how it glistens in the sunlight. This, my friends, is what food should look like. It was delicious. Could have used more cheese, but then again it's probably best that they only used one slice per sammich, or people would have been keeling over dead on the spot. From now on, though, I want all of my grilled cheese sammiches to be deep-fried.

Our next stop was for a Deep-fried Banana Split for Jess.

I don't like bananas (they are icky), but apparently this was very delicious, if you are a weirdo banana-loving freak like Jess. The balls are banana and honey peanut butter, and it's topped with caramel AND chocolate, plus whipped cream and a cherry. And nuts, which makes it healthy.

Next, I wanted to try the Deep-fried Chocolate-Covered Strawberry Waffle Balls.

Don't they look beautiful? They are chocolate-covered strawberries, dipped in waffle batter, then deep-fried and topped with powdered sugar. They were intensely amazing. I want more.

....sorry, I got lost staring at that picture. I really wish I had more of those. *ahem*

Next! We walked down Food Alley to find Deep-fried S'Mores.

Ohhhhhhh man. We split this, and it's a good thing we did. It was sooooo rich. Delicious, but rich and sweet and afterwards we had to swish water around in our mouths to stop the sugar from dissolving our teeth. Deep-fried s'mores should not exist. They are an abomination. A delicious, delicious abomination.

After we recovered, we walked a little farther to find Fire and Ice.

Deep-fried pineapple, topped with strawberries and whipped cream. The whipped cream was apparently frozen/mixed with liquid nitrogen to make it extra cold, thus the name. It was delicious, and also interesting to eat. Hot pineapple + cool strawberries + cold whipped cream = confused mouth. But man. Delicious.

By this point we were getting kind of full, but there was still one more food item on our list of required eats: the Chicken-fried Bacon

The line for this stuff was long. There were actually two lines, each about... 30 people long, give or take. I'm terrible at estimating these things. Long. Lots of people. When we got our order I told the guy I was going to die after eating it. He responded, "Naw, just walk around a bit after, you'll be fine." I think he lied. We sat down to eat, and whoooaaaaa. My mouth was so confused. It couldn't decide if I was eating chicken or bacon. It was pretty good, though. I didn't think it was quite as good as all the hype (it was a bit salty, which I rarely say since I'm a salt fiend) but Jess liked it a lot.

So after we died of a few heart attacks, we decided we really need Sprite to settle our stomachs, which were by this point threatening to secede. I got a Sprite and a Lemon Chill, while Jess got a 7-Up and an order of Deep-fried Cheesecake.

I tried a bite of it, and while it was good, my entire body threatened to leave me if I ate any more. Plus I was hoping it would kill Jess, and I would have defeated my arch-nemesis.

Alas, she survived, and we split the Lemon Chill. The Lemon Chill and the lemony carbonated beverages actually made both of us feel more human, and we were able to drag ourselves to our feet to walk through the midway and to the exit. By the time we got to my car, we both sort of collapsed into the seat with a big "oooooomigawd" sigh. I actually got home a few hours ago, but it's taken me this long to recover enough to be able to type.

Oh, and we saw a tiny train:

CHOOOOOO CHOO!

i know i made fun of you on twitter for this stuff being so unhealthy, but i want it. all. now.

dude, you should come up here for festival of the arts sometime and try some of the food here. it's not all deep fried and not all that exotic for the most part, but it's yummy and there's free music and stuff to boot.

Doesn't it all look delicious? It was amazing, if deadly. I really wish I knew where to get the strawberry waffle balls outside of the fair.

[identity profile] radiantlove.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow. That all looks deadly, but so good!
As you twittered, my eyes kept getting bigger & bigger as I tried to comprehend consuming so much of that in one day. but wow- You've gotta take those chances when they're available!

[identity profile] syntheticjesso.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
IT WAS.

I'm just glad Jess and I split everything but the waffle balls and banana split. Otherwise I think we would have exploded. And it's definitely a once-a-year thing only!

that's a lot of fried stuff! i think i'd have to eat salad for 3 days straight just to make up for it.

[identity profile] syntheticjesso.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
That is the plan! Before we left, I made five batches of Caesar dressing, from different recipes, that I plan to try to see which I like best. There will be plenty of salad :D

I left a comment on your twitter updates but now I see the PICTURES I'm still kicking at myself for not going this year!

I'm surprised the bacon won this year - it's been around forever in a little diner near Austin and thus made famous by the UT'ers that frequent it, lol. Were these the same owners, I wonder?

Those waffle strawberry things looked amazing - I read about it in the paper how everyone thought they were going to win, oh well - guess not!

(Oooh, did you try/see the deep-fried latte? I read about that too!)

[identity profile] syntheticjesso.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of surprised the bacon won, too! I mean, it was good and definitely in the spirit of killing consumers, but the waffle balls! Those should have won, I think, or possibly the Fire&Ice.

We did see the deep-fried latte, but by that point we were nearly dead, so we passed it by. I even passed up on deep-fried pickles, that's how dead I was. I LOVE deep-fried pickles!

[identity profile] mary-lennox.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
So far I've tried deep fried pickles at Razzoo's and at Chicken Express - both were the pickle chips with a light batter and were kind of interesting, if really salty. I haven't seen the fried pickle spears you mentioned - where do you usually get 'em at?

[identity profile] syntheticjesso.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Most places serve the chips, and it makes me sad. I've heard Hooters serves spears, but I've yet to go order them.

Seeing the grilled cheese again...I WANT ANOTHER ONE. HOLY CRAP.

[identity profile] syntheticjesso.livejournal.com 2008-10-19 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I KNOW. I want more waffle balls.

I bet I could make the Fire & Ice, though. Well, maybe not the liquid nitrogen frozen whipped cream, but I could stick a tub of whipped cream in my freezer to emulate it.

BABY, I'M AMAZED.
