100 Things - #7 Fall/Winter
Sep. 9th, 2007 10:22 pmI'm in a talky mood, but I don't really have anything to talk about, so I'm tackling item #7 from my 100 Things That Make Me Jesso.

I sometimes wonder if I have some mild form of Reverse SAD. I feel so much more alive and happy during the fall and winter months. I dread and hate the summer months, and I count down until fall comes back. Even now, with this mild summer we've had, I'm antsy for fall to come back. Too much heat, too much sunshine, the days last too long, ugh.
I want cold! I want dark, gloomy, cloudy days! I want to drive with my windows down and arrive at my destination with a frozen face! I want to wear my toe socks!
I don't really know why I adore the fall and winter months so much. I always catch flak from people who are more north than me. "Oh, you'd hate winter if you had winters like ours," they say. I don't believe them. At all. Winter is so, so beautiful. There is nothing more invigorating than a good cold wind, the kind that catches your breath and takes it far far away.
As much as it makes me feel alive, it makes me feel small, too. When it is cold, I feel small. I can't describe it any better than that. I think maybe I'm like metal, and I shrink in the cold. My fingers definitely feel smaller.
Weekends are better in the winter. The cold makes sleeping in that much better, because it makes bed that much warmer and more comfy. In the summer, I get hot, and sleep is not so good. In the winter, sleep is wonderful, burrowed under blankets, sometimes with a cat curled up under the blankets with me. Tesla did that a couple times, I'm hoping she'll do that again this winter.
I love going to parks in the cold months. They are usually a lot emptier. I like parks with lots of trees, for me to wander through. My favorite is the Botanical Gardens. Everyone goes there in the spring and summer to look at the pretty flowers, and while they are pretty, the thing that draws me to the Botanical Gardens is the trees. There's one whole big area of trees that are never visited because there are no flowers or paths, but it's my favorite place. In the fall, I go there to sit in peace.
Winter is so peaceful. People slow down, aren't so busy buzzing around. The days are shorter, so there is more dark, quiet night time.
Also, in the fall is November. November means NaNoWriMo. If you want invigoration, write a novel in a month. It's an adventure, and that feeling of accomplishment when the novel is done, it's amazing.
I don't know how else to explain my love of fall and winter. It's the exact opposite of everything I hate about the summer, really. It's cool, dark, refreshing, happy, productive, relaxing, and just a hundred millions times better.
I want it to be winter right now.
"October is reliably a good month. I'm waking up, and I feel like I'm being released from my summer... jail cell."
